History: In 1990, a local PC distributor/service company (VALCOM) was cleaning out their warehouse, and donated a truckload of processors, monitors, printers, software, and parts to us. Through involvement in local disability support groups such as the Richmond Supportive Survivors, the Virginia Brain Injury Association, The Ohio Valley Center, Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Hospital, The Rehabilitation Hospital of Virginia, the West End Jaycees, as well as other nonprofit organizations, local colleges, Department of Rehabilitation Services, Social Security, and the Internet, our disabled board members found a population of underserved disabled persons without funds to buy and without support from state/federal agencies. Armed with an idea, determination, pieces and parts, supportive friends/family, and donated shop space, we tried to fill the void. Created in 1991, our organization started as a two people giving away extra computers, parts, and support to the disabled. Working out of an attic in a 150 year old farmhouse, then a damp basement, to a auto repair shop, and finally to a furniture warehouse; we have struggled with finding donated space that was adequate. We have delivered over 100 personal computers in 7 years. Time and time again we see first-hand the dramatic effect of connecting a isolated person to the Internet . . . Currently: In operation for over 7 years, we have recently organized to become a private, nonprofit corporation as of January 25, 1998. Our office and shop is located in western Henrico County, and our warehouse space (donated by Habitat for Humanity) is in the city of Richmond, Virginia. Our diverse board includes three disabled persons (an office manager and two PC technicians), two business executives, one electrical contractor, and one electronics repair specialist.
